After reading Joe Flowers’ post “Why I won’t renew with ASAE in 2011” I thought I would share my opinion on why I did renew with ASAE in 2011. First I want to say that Joe’s post was great, I completely understand his opinion on why he will not be renewing in 2011. Like Scott Briscoe said in his post on Acronym, ASAE is not alone in the member value battle. Every association works hard on bringing the most value to its members. Sometimes there is just not a good fit and it becomes time to let that membership lapse.
So why did I renew in 2011? First, I believe in ASAE’s mission. Second, I find great value in the tools that ASAE provides. The resources and communities on the website are great. As Joe mentions there are a great deal of resources that can be accessed without an ASAE membership, I feel that the community that ASAE provides is worth the price of admission. While I do take advantage of some resources outside of ASAE, I use the online resource library that ASAE provides a great deal. The resources within the library have been instrumental to me over the past few years.
Another reason I renewed in 2011 is to continue with my goal of becoming a CAE. While my overall goal is to continue my professional growth in this industry, I see that obtaining my CAE is a key part of that growth. Lastly, I want to support ASAE. ASAE is doing some great things in this industry and I want to be a part of that. I feel that not only supporting ASAE through membership is great, but I want to contribute my time through volunteering where possible. So until my goals and ambitions change I see myself continuing my membership with ASAE.
